CARING children have been taking part in a sponsored silence to raise money for a vital life-saving service.
More than 100 children from Oscars, an after-school and holiday care club for Hartlepool youngsters, helped raise £745 for the RNLI.

Oscars, which is run by Hartlepool Borough Council, has three centres across town in Jesmond Road Primary School, in Percy Street, Miers Avenue Sure Start Centre and Owton Manor Community Centre, in Wynyard Road.

The sponsored silence was part of a fun day which was held earlier this year. Karl Mann, six, and eight-year-old Jack Penfold, managed to raise more than £100 each in sponsorship for the silence, which lasted half an hour and involved 120 children.

Oscars co-ordinator Sandra Robinson said: "The children wanted to raise money for the RNLI after they invited us down to have a tour of the lifeboat station. The sponsored silence was a great success and I would like to thank all the parents and children for raising such a great sum."

Oscars provides activities and entertainment for more than 120 children aged between four and 16.
